Utthara — handwoven sarees

Est. Bengaluru

Threads that remember.

Our Story

The Beginning

A quiet love letter to the six yards that raised us.

Utthara began in a small studio in Bengaluru, between hand-drawn sketches and long conversations with weavers across South India. We wanted to make sarees that felt like heirlooms — soft enough for a Tuesday, deliberate enough for the moments you will tell stories about.

01

Handwoven, slowly

Each saree takes weeks on the loom. We work with weaving families who have kept these techniques alive for generations.

02

Finished by hand

Every tassel, every fall, every pico — touched and checked by us before it ever reaches you.

03

Made in small batches

No mass production. No noise. Just a few pieces at a time, designed to outlast the season they were born in.

On the loom

On the loom

Where a saree begins, long before it becomes yours.

In quiet villages across Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, our weavers sit at pit looms passed down through three or four generations. A single drape can take three weeks of patient, rhythmic work.

In your wardrobe

Worn softly. Remembered loudly.

We design for the woman who arrives without announcing herself — the quietly confident, the deeply rooted, the ones who carry tradition like perfume. Light enough to live in, considered enough to last decades.

In your wardrobe

Moments

A diary of days the drape was worn in.

A quiet morning above the city

Above the city

Slow mornings, a borrowed verandah, a book half read.

The ivory cotton with its quiet zari border — light enough to wear with the first cup of coffee, soft enough to forget you are wearing anything at all.

In bloom

Pink silk, a wild bougainvillea, a laugh you could not hold in.

The Banarasi-inspired weave in fuchsia and olive — woven for afternoons that spill into evenings, for the rooms you want to remember by their colour.

A pink saree in afternoon light

The old lodge

Marigold garlands, a wooden bench, a sky beginning to fold.

The indigo check on ivory — woven for festival evenings, for courtyards lit by string lights, for the photographs you will keep for years.

An evening at the old lodge
The drape against the tide

At the tide line

Where the water folds into white foam, and time slows.

A saree breathes best by the sea — salt in the air, cotton catching the breeze, the drape moving like water itself. For the hours when the sun is low and the world feels unhurried.
